NOTICES:

Dear Granby Resident,

The Town of Granby implemented a new residential curbside trash and recycling collection system beginning June 29, 2009.   This program is part of an effort to reduce costs while increasing recycling participation.

·       Beginning the week of June 29, 2009, your recycling is picked up every two weeks on your current day.  Trash collection will continue to be weekly and on your current day.

·       The new system incorporates SINGLE-STREAM recycling.  This means you place all your recyclables in the 95-gallon container, including cardboard.  For additional information on accepted recyclables click on What to Recycle Curbside.

·       Residents who have extra trash may purchase special town-issued purple trash bags for $2 each.  They may be purchased weekdays at the Public Works office at 52 N. Granby Road, or the Transfer Station on Old Stagecoach Road on Saturdays. Only these town-issued purple “extra trash” bags will be collected by Paine’s Inc.  It is not necessary to notify Public Works if you will have extra trash.

·       If your new trash barrel still does not meet your household needs, you have the option to rent a second 65-gallon trash barrel for $200 per year.

·       Extra recycling may be brought to the Town Transfer Station on Saturdays (A large amount of cardboard may not fit in the 95-gallon barrel).

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Director of Public Works James Klase at 860-653-8960 or click here.

This new system will create an initial cost savings of $50,000 for Granby taxpayers and generate a greater awareness of what can and should be recycled.  As the State’s landfills begin to close, it is important to be proactive in reducing the waste stream we generate.  We appreciate your patience and participation in the program.

Sincerely,
The Public Works Staff

THINK ABOUT IT...

Every resident of Granby throws away nearly 2 pounds of trash every day. And although these numbers are on the decline, it is clear we need to continue to reduce the amount of trash we generate. Waste reduction can easily become second nature to all of us, if we adopt a few very simple habits.

Keep canvas bags in your car and use it for shopping rather than using bags from the store.

Buy in bulk when you can. And avoid purchasing disposable items.

Give paint, old clothing, furniture and appliances to charities or consignment shops. Or have a tag sale.

Buy recyclable containers and items with little or no packaging. And buy recycled products.

Compost! Compost! Compost!
